We've been working hard for years to bring lansoprazole, the same medicine in Prevacid®*, over-the-counter to treat frequent heartburn as Prevacid®24HR (lansoprazole delayed-release capsules 15 mg / acid reducer).
On May 18, 2009, Prevacid®24HR was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of frequent heartburn. It is the first and only over-the-counter PPI in its original formulation.
*Prevacid® is indicated to treat many other acid related conditions.
A: Short for Proton Pump Inhibitor, a PPI is the type of acid-reducer medicine that stops or inhibits "proton pumps" from releasing most acid into the stomach.
Q: What are the indications for Prevacid®24HR and prescription Prevacid®?
Prevacid®24HR is indicated for the treatment of frequent heartburn (heartburn that occurs two or more days per week) in adults.

Prevacid®24HR may take 1-4 days for full effect, although some people get complete relief of symptoms within 24 hours.
Prevacid®24HR is indicated for the treatment of frequent heartburn, which occurs 2 or more days a week. Use as directed for 14 days. You may repeat one 14-day course every 4 months or as directed by your doctor. If your heartburn continues or worsens stop use and ask your doctor.
